DePauw Memorial United Methodist Church is rich in history. She began as the Kingsley Mission in 1851 but the building burned in 1883. A new building was erected and donated by Washington C. DePauw, a local manufacturer, grain dealer and banker.

Sadly, the day before the church was to be dedicated in 1884, Mr. DePauw’s thirteen-year-old daughter, Jennie, died unexpectedly from typhoid. The next day, the church was officially named the Jennie DePauw Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church in her memory.

Unfortunately, the church burned in 1899. A new church built of limestone was erected and dedicated in 1901. Fire destroyed this building in 1917. Church members purchased bricks from the old woolen mills in New Albany and gathered almost every night to collect, clean, and stack bricks for the new church. The current building was dedicated in 1919.

DePauw received several remodels over the years—particularly in 1962 and again in 1984.
